Nancy Zeltsman’s first (mostly-) solo marimba album in 18 years offers a respite from the noise in our world. Keenly grateful in recent years for the relationships and mentors that shaped her, Nancy says this album welled up to honor their influence and inspiration.

The selections on this album are all of a piece while celebrating the singular musical voices of masterful creators. Two are jazz bassist/composers: Avishai Cohen (“Structure in Emotion”) and Moto Fukushima (“Forming the Emptiness”). Zeltsman honors the virtuosic improvisation by pianist Tommy Flanagan in his version of a Horace Silver jazz standard (“Peace”). Three movements from “Poèmes pour Mi” originally for soprano and piano – heard here as songs without words for clarinet and marimba – arguably reveal the iconic compositional voice of Olivier Messiaen as effectively as the originals. English composer Howard Skempton’s “Preludes” (from Images) for piano are minimalist masterpieces both individually and as a set and here – with the composer’s blessing – have been combined with a montage of sounds and voices assembled by Zeltsman “In Memoriam” to ten of her loved ones who have passed away.
