about

Prelude 3 from Images by Howard Skempton

Nancy Zeltsman, marimba
Marcus Zeltsman, baritone horn

A duet conceived by Nancy Zeltsman that was played 43 years apart! Nancy’s part was recorded in 2023; Marcus’s was recorded in 1980.

Marcus Zeltsman (1884-1981), Nancy’s grandfather, was a baritone horn player, social/political activist, hat maker, and accountant. His love of music clearly passed down to Nancy’s father, and then to her. She might not be a musician if it weren’t for Marcus.

Nancy’s cousin Jon Zeltsman recalls that Marcus was recorded playing the baritone horn in his family’s backyard in Cedar Grove, New Jersey. Marcus would have been about 96 years old. He died within a year of this recording. Nancy was amazed to discover that excerpts of what he played that day – off the top of his head – combined surprisingly well with Skempton’s “Prelude 3”! Michael Seifert contributed to the timing of the added baritone horn segments. This version is a slight remix of this movement from the complete Skempton “Preludes” recorded on Nancy’s album, “purple music.” Notes on the complete version can be found on Nancy’s website.
